Honestly, I don't normally go for comic books. I like them just fine and always recommend them to my kids, but I generally prefer a more text-heavy reading experience. I received this copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review (I have to say that). But honestly, after I finished this book, I totally ordered the whole series for my library.
This isn't some nauseatingly saccharine unicorn princess book, I promise. The protagonist, Phoebe, plays Dungeons & Dragons for crying out loud! And I love her. She's kind, funny, imaginative, and an excellent role model for readers. Her parent are (probably my age) nerdy and lovingly snarky without being scathing. The humor is a touch sarcastic without being mean or belittling. It's really hard to walk that line, yet Dana Simpson manages it with aplomb.
Phoebe and her unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, remind me a bit of Calvin and Hobbs in their reflective banter and observations. This book is for fans of tongue-in-cheek humor like Bob Shea's picture books Unicorn Thinks He's Pretty Great and Ballet Cat or Gail Carson Levine's chapter book series The Enchanted Forest Chronicles. I can't wait to get the whole set! This is a fun, lighthearted read that I recommend as a pick me up- which I totally need right now. Thank you, Dana Simpson.
